As an intern at the Florida Surplus Lines Service Office (FSLSO), I had the opportunity to gain both regulatory and customer service experience in Florida’s surplus lines insurance market. A key component of my internship was successfully completing FSLSO’s 60-hour Surplus Lines Training Course, which provided in-depth knowledge of surplus lines laws, filing requirements, compliance procedures, and the role of the FSLSO in regulating non-admitted insurance transactions.
In addition to the coursework, I worked closely with the Agent and Insurer Services team, where I gained hands-on experience responding to agent inquiries, assisting with policy filing issues, and helping ensure compliance with Florida surplus lines regulations. Through direct interaction with licensed agents and support staff, I developed a stronger understanding of the challenges agents face in submitting and correcting surplus lines filings, as well as how FSLSO supports them through customer-focused solutions.
Having recently earned my bachelor's degree in risk management and insurance from Troy University, this internship has equipped me with both the academic knowledge and practical skills necessary to begin a successful career in the insurance field. I am confident in my readiness to take on a professional role in underwriting, compliance, or agency operations and contribute meaningfully to the industry from day one.
