During my internship at the Florida Surplus Lines Service Office (FSLSO) in the Agent and Insurer Services Department, I gained valuable knowledge about the insurance and surplus lines industry. Everyone on staff played a huge part in my success this summer. They guided me and taught me so many valuable lessons that I will take into my professional career.

Throughout the internship, I had the opportunity to work on a variety of projects that allowed me to gain hands-on experience. I became familiar with SLIP+, the filing platform used by agents to submit surplus lines policies in Florida. I also worked on several Excel-based projects that strengthened my analytical and data management skills. The main goal at FSLSO is to promote a reputable and modern insurance marketplace and this is portrayed through their efforts to increase compliance.

During my 10-week IGNITE program I also received two certifications for surplus lines insurance. I completed the 60-Hour Surplus Lines Pre-Licensing Course as well as the Surplus Lines Information and Compliance Education. Completing these courses provided me with a solid foundation in surplus lines insurance and further prepared me for future opportunities in the industry.

I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to spend my summer at FSLSO. Coming into the internship with limited knowledge of the insurance industry, I was welcomed into an environment where everyone was supportive, encouraging, and genuinely invested in my success. I would highly recommend this internship to both students who are new to Risk Management and Insurance (RMI) and those who already have experience in the field. This experience has been both rewarding and memorable, and I will always be thankful for the opportunity!
